Today marked the exciting first day of our Junior Lifeguard Course, held in partnership with Nick Thorn Surf Coaching at the stunning Putsborough Beach. With perfect weather and a fantastic group of students, the day was a great success!

This one-day Junior Beach Lifeguarding and Surf Cadet course, recognised by Surf Life Saving Great Britain, is running across three days this week and is open to students in Years 7, 8, and 9. It’s designed as the first stepping-stone toward a full lifeguard qualification, but also offers valuable life skills and sea safety education for all participants—whether or not they plan to pursue lifeguarding further.

What the Course Covers

The programme is packed with engaging, hands-on learning, including:

🌊 Confidence in the Water: Diving under waves, wading, and body surfing
🏄 Introductory Board Rescue: Paddling techniques and rescue basics
🧠 Basic Lifeguard Knowledge: Understanding beach safety and rescue protocols
🩹 First Aid Skills: Including the recovery position
🌍 Environmental Awareness: Learning about plastic pollution and local environmental impacts

Endorsed by Surf Lifesaving Great Britain, North Devon District Council (NDDC), and Active Devon, the course is led by Nick Thorn, a Lifeguard Trainer Assessor and Level 4 Master Surf Coach, along with his team of qualified beach lifeguards and surf instructors.

This course is a brilliant opportunity for young people aged 11–14 to build confidence, learn essential life-saving skills, and develop a deeper respect for the ocean environment.

We’re looking forward to welcoming more students over the next two days and seeing their skills and confidence grow!
