The first practice expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh Award took place over the weekend of 25 April, marking an exciting milestone for the participating students. Setting off from Braunton Academy at 9am on Saturday, the group embarked on a two‑day trek across the stunning landscapes of Exmoor, returning to school on Sunday 26 April tired, proud, and full of stories.

The school equipped the students with tents and stoves, while each participant packed their own supplies: one breakfast, one evening meal, two lunches, and plenty of snacks to keep their energy up along the way. With rucksacks loaded and spirits high, the group made steady progress through the hills and valleys of Exmoor, navigating their route with growing confidence.

Their overnight stop was at Yenworthy Lodge, located between Lynmouth and Porlock. After a long day of walking, the lodge offered a welcome rest and a chance for the students to put their campcraft skills into practice. For many, it was their first experience of managing their own campsite, cooking outdoors, and working as a team to get everything set up before nightfall.

Despite the physical challenge, the group embraced the experience wholeheartedly. By the time they arrived back at Braunton Academy on Sunday, they were exhausted but clearly proud of what they had achieved.

Simon, who supported the expedition, praised both the attitude and teamwork of the students, saying:

“I have been running DofE expeditions for many years; it was one of the most pleasant I have been involved with and the group themselves were a credit to the school.”

The practice expedition not only helped students develop essential outdoor skills but also strengthened their resilience, independence, and teamwork—core values at the heart of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. With this successful first outing behind them, the group now looks ahead to their next expedition with confidence.
