Dear Families

I hope you have had a good week and adjusted to the cold weather! I know for many of our families there has been added pressure at the start of the day with the disruption caused by the road works in the village, hopefully they will be completed quickly.

I would like to start with praise to our Year 11s who have been amazing over the past two weeks as they sit the full suite of Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs).  The Exams Manager and invigilator team have fed back that the students have been exemplary throughout the process which bodes well for later this academic year.  Their teachers are busy marking the exams and the raw grades and feedback will be delivered over the next couple of weeks.  Students and families will find out their specific gradings at Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 11th December.  I would like to thank all of the families for their support for the students, it is a practice run for you at home to see how your child needs to prepare and how they manage.  Following this experience if you feel there is additional support that may be needed for your child, please contact school through the Year11Pastoral@braunton.academy email address.

This week has brought further sporting success.  Both the Year 7 and Year 8 boys football teams have clinched the title of North Devon Champions this week and over the weekend our climbing team came second in the regional competition.

Two quick reminders for next week.

·         On Wednesday 26th November we have the Class of 2025 students returning in the evening for Celebration Evening and to collect their official exams certificates.  Doors open at 6.30 pm with refreshments, with the formal presentations starting at 7.00 pm.

·         Friday is our annual occasional day. School is closed to all staff and students on Friday 28th November.

Finally, the Academy Trust has its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 9th December.  Please find the links below to the agenda and invitation.

Airborne Viruses

As the colder months approach, we can expect to see increases in common airborne viruses. Illness is the biggest single reason for school absence; while some absences due to illness are unavoidable, many can be reduced through simple, proactive measures that minimise the spread of infections. Scientific evidence demonstrates that vaccination, disinfection (cleaning), handwashing, and ventilation can significantly reduce the transmission of infectious diseases.

Please take time to read the two links below to help us reduce the number of student absences this winter:

Year 11 News

Message from Devon County Council – Outward Bound Adventure Opportunity

The Sir Francis Chichester Trust is offering FREE places on 14 and 19 day (Summit & Pinnacle) Outward Bound adventures for young people aged 16–22 living in Devon, (including Plymouth & Torbay). Courses run in July/August 2026 at Outward Bound centres in the Lake District, Wales, and Scotland.  Application deadline: 20 January 2026.

We invite you to encourage young people to apply. These life-changing expeditions help young people transition into sixth form, further education, or work. Participants build confidence, teamwork, and resilience - skills that change lives and stand out on personal statements and CVs. They’ll meet peers from around the world and discover what they’re truly capable of. One young person who attended in 2025 said: “This experience showed me that I’m capable of far more than I ever believed and has inspired me to take on new challenges in life.”

Applicants need to enjoy and have some experience of outdoor challenges and wouldn’t normally have the opportunity of such an adventure and the positive benefits it can bring.

Shortlisted applicants must be able to attend interviews in Exeter on 26 or 27 February 2026. Application forms and more information are available at: Sir Francis Chichester Trust | The Outward Bound Trust

The Sir Francis Chichester Trust will meet the full course fee (around £2000 /person) for successful applicants.

 Travel:

**Successful applicants will be responsible for arranging and paying for their own transport between Devon and the Outward Bound centre of their choice, as well as travel insurance. However, if transport costs are prohibitive then we will look at additional support if possible. Bus transfers from stations near to Outward Bound centres are available.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for young people who love the outdoors and are ready to grow. If you know someone who fits the bill, please encourage them to apply—and feel free to get in touch with any questions.

Year 9 News

Year 9 Assessment Exams – Thursday 15th to Monday 19th January 2026

We would like to inform you that Year 9 assessment exams will take place during the second week back after the Christmas break, from Thursday 15th to Monday 19th January. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their progress and prepare for the demands of GCSEs.

For English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, and Languages, exams will be held in the Sports Hall under formal conditions to give students valuable experience of the environment they will encounter during their real GCSE exams. This practice helps build confidence and familiarity with the process.

Subject teachers will provide revision lists to support preparation, and we strongly encourage families to help students plan and complete their revision at home. Your support in creating a calm, focused environment and checking in on their progress can make a significant difference. We will be providing students with their exam timetables soon, so please encourage your children to plan their revision and study timetable.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students achieve their best.
