Students Take Part in Junior Lifeguard Course at Putsborough Beach

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week, our students were given the exciting opportunity to take part in a Junior Lifeguard Course at Putsborough Beach.

Delivered in partnership with Nick Thorn Surf Coaching, students completed a full one-day Surf Cadet Course, recognised by Surf Life Saving Great Britain. The course serves as the first stepping stone towards gaining a lifeguard qualification and provides young people with valuable knowledge and practical experience in sea safety, beach education, life skills and lifesaving techniques.

The Junior Lifeguard Programme is endorsed by Surf Life Saving Great Britain, North Devon District Council and Active Devon, reflecting its importance in helping young people develop confidence, responsibility and essential safety awareness around the coast.

Nick Thorn, a highly experienced Lifeguard Trainer Assessor and Level 4 Master Surf Coach, led the sessions alongside his team of qualified beach lifeguards and surf instructors. Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of interactive activities designed to build confidence and develop lifesaving knowledge and skills.

Activities included:

- Learning about plastic pollution, environmental change and its impact on our local coastline.
- Basic first aid training, including how to place someone in the recovery position.
- Building confidence in the water through diving under waves, wading and body surfing.
- Introduction to board rescue techniques and paddling skills.
- Understanding basic lifeguard knowledge and responsibilities.
- Practising fundamental lifesaving techniques.

The course provided an excellent balance of education, practical experience and fun, giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves in a supportive environment while learning skills that could one day help save a life.

We are incredibly grateful to Nick Thorn Surf Coaching for delivering such an engaging and inspiring programme. The students represented the school brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed their time on the beach, returning with increased confidence, valuable knowledge and unforgettable memories.
