Members of the Braunton Academy Eco Club enjoyed a wonderful end-of-year visit to the Braunton Countryside Centre, where they took part in an engaging and informative session led by Mary Breeds, one of the centre's expert volunteers.

During the visit, students learned about the rich variety of local flora and fauna found within our area and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting the natural environment. Mary shared fascinating insights into the significance of the North Devon Biosphere and explained how local habitats support a diverse range of wildlife.

One of the key messages from the session was the vital role that grasses play in supporting biodiversity. Students discovered that many insects depend on native grasses for food, shelter and breeding habitats, making them an essential part of a healthy ecosystem. This led to some thought-provoking discussions about how even small changes can have a positive impact on local wildlife.

The visit has inspired our Eco Club to take action back at school. Their next project will be to identify an area within the academy grounds where native grasses can be encouraged to flourish. By creating and protecting this habitat, students hope to increase biodiversity on site and provide valuable support for insects and other wildlife.

The Eco Club would like to thank Mary Breeds and everyone at Braunton Countryside Centre for providing such an enjoyable and educational experience. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of our biodiversity project and continuing our commitment to making Braunton Academy a greener and more wildlife-friendly place. 🌱🦋🐝
