Seniors ace speaking competition
The end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 have been busy for Youth Speaks at Braunton Academy. In the Autumn term over 30 students individually auditioned for a place in our intermediate and senior teams, and in December, having chosen our final senior team, two intermediate teams went head to head in the library, for a place in the competition.
On Saturday 3rd of February the intermediate team consisting of Jay Tittle as Chair Person, Nathaniel Rodney-Jones as the Main Speaker and Lucy Beasly as the Vote of Thanks competed for a place in the North Devon final at Grosvenor Church in Barnstaple. Unfortunately, even though their speech on vegetarianism was incredibly strong and moved the audience, they were just pipped to the post, by the Pilton and Park intermediate teams.
However, our senior team made up of Hannah Alexander as a last minute stand in as Chair Person, Scarlett Rolls as the Main Speaker and Cassius Lay as the Vote of Thanks won the competition with their persuasive speech on the future of foreign languages in schools. Not only did they win on the 3rd February, but they went on to win the North Devon and Bude Area Final on Saturday 24th February with Holly-Milton Jefferies back in her position as Chair Person. The competition was tough, but they made it through and will be competing at the District Final in Bodmin on Saturday 24th March.
The very best of luck to you from all of us at school!
UPDATE.... 24th March 2018
The Braunton Academy Senior Youth Speaks team just goes from strength to strength, having overcome stiff opposition today to win the Rotary District 1175 competition at Bodmin College. To crown a successful afternoon, Scarlett was deservedly awarded Best Speaker. The Regional Final will be held at Shaftesbury School on 21 April, with teams from as far away as the Channel Islands taking part. Onwards and upwards, team!
