2015 Sports Personality named

Posted: 14th July 2015

The coveted PE Department award, Sports Personality of the Year, was won this year by Ellie Austin. Ellie's extensive list of sporting achievements impressed the pupils and staff, all of whom were given the chance to vote in this annual competition. Ellie's sport is volleyball, and she was part of the U16 squad from Croyde Beach Volleyball Academy which won the  Indoor National Volleyball Championships, also being voted their most valuable player. She is also a cadet in the England volleyball squad. Ellie has also achieved great things in Beach Volleyball this year, being voted junior Player of the Year (U17), winner of the Junior Tour (U19) and selected for the England squad. She represents the Southwest at U16 level, and is funded by Sport Aid. Ellie is a gifted and promising athlete, and we all look forward to seeing her future achievements.

Runners-up in the contest were Milly Wordley and Joel Kirby. Milly has represented Barnstaple, Exeter, Southwest Girls and Great Britain in Water Polo. She was the 2nd top goalscorer in the GB U17 team last year, and captained the U19 Southwest team, also becoming their leading goalscorer. Milly's incredibly hard training is really paying off, as she has already played in several international fixtures and has been selected for the GB U19 team at the European Championships in September 2015.

Joel has represented North Devon Schools and Devon Schools at cross country, where he came in 2nd and 3rd respectively, and also won the Stephen's Shield, a regional competition. Joel also competed at the English Schools athletics competition where he took 1st place in the 1500m.

Other nominated athletes this year were Lauren Huggins (netball and volleyball), Nicole Short (volleyball, netball and surf lifesaving), Alex Rowe (rugby), and Charlie Davey-James (shot put).
